Italian Hunter College student slain

Slain waitress Rita Morelli came to New York five years ago from a small town on the calf of Italy’s boot, looking for bigger things. A lover of music, art and languages, the vivacious 36-year-old fell hard for the city’s crazy-quilt diversity. She was getting a degree at Hunter College and was a popular waitress at Caffe Buon Gusto, an upper East Side red sauce joint. “It was her city,” her cousin Giorgio Morelli, an Italian journalist who works in New York, told the America Oggi newspaper. “She always said, ‘Better to live five years as a lion in America than 15 of boredom in Abruzzo.’ ” When her family back home in Spoltore, near the Adriatic city of Pescara, fretted that she lived in Harlem, Morelli laughed at their Hollywood-born fears and said they had nothing to worry about. But on Wednesday night, she opened her door to a killer who left her E. 120th St. studio ransacked and her body sprawled in a massive pool of blood. “He killed a dream: the American Dream,” her brother, Giuseppe Morelli, told Italian TV. “I believe she underestimated the dangers of life in America, and I’m kicking myself that I didn’t warn her better,” he said. Police released few details of their investigation. Morelli’s live-in boyfriend found the body shortly after 10 p.m. on Wednesday, police said. The killer had tried to strangle Morelli, then stabbed her twice in the chest and slashed open her throat, cops said. He left the door ajar when he took off with some of her belongings.
