For ‘War Horse,’ Spielberg opts for real animals

It might have been easier to use a real great white shark in the filming of “Jaws” than to have shot the sweeping battle sequences of “War Horse” using real animals. That’s just what Steven Spielberg, however, decided to do.

Bull-Dogs show real bite against Curtis

As Campus Magnet coach Eric Barnett is fond of saying, Bull-Dogs quarterback Kahlik Greenwood may not possess an arm that can match Curtis’ young signal-caller, Prince Dukes, or the running ability of Tottenville quarterback Brandon Barnes.
“But I still have the best quarterback in the city,” Barnett likes to say.
Greenwood, a junior in his first season under center, displayed his pinpoint precision on Saturday against Curtis in a first-round City Championship Division playoff game, proving that for a day at least, Barnett may be right. With his ninth-ranked team trailing No. 8 Curtis by a touchdown late in the game, Greenwood calmly engineered a long scoring drive, capping it by putting a pass right into the hands of Antoine Allen, who caught it in strideand ran the rest of the way for a 33-yard touchdown that tied the score before Campus Magnet escaped with a 14-12 win at home.

In this Friday, Oct. 28, 2011 photo, Richard Muller, left, and his daughter, Elizabeth Muller, right, pose with a map from their study on climate at their home in Berkeley, Calif. A new study of Earth’s temperatures going back more than 200 years finds the same old story: It’s gotten hotter in the last 60 years. What’s different is the scientist behind the latest study, Richard Muller. The California physicist was doubtful of what climate scientists have been saying - until he did his own research, partly funded by climate change skeptics. Elizabeth Muller, co-founder and executive director of the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature Study, ran the study. (AP Photo/Paul Sakuma)AP – A prominent physicist and skeptic of global warming spent two years trying to find out if mainstream climate scientists were wrong. In the end, he determined they were right: Temperatures really are rising rapidly.

Cupp: Time for Cain to start running a real campaign

As cynically as we’ve all become about the business of running for President, we somewhat paradoxically also demand that while a candidate is out selling his wares, he also believes in the product, knows it inside out and isn’t just some empty, Manchurian pitchman-for-hire.

In this photo released by Noticias de Colares on Thursday Sept. 29, 2011, U.S. fugitive George Wright is seen in a post office in Praia das Macas, Portugal in 2000. Wright was arrested Sept. 26, 2011 by Portuguese authorities at the request of the U.S. government after more than 40 years as a fugitive, authorities said. The FBI says Wright, who escaped the Bayside State Prison in Leesburg, N.J., in 1970, became affiliated with the Black Liberation Army and in 1972 he and his associates hijacked a Delta flight from Detroit to Miami. After releasing the passengers in exchange for a $1 million ransom, the hijackers forced the plane to fly to Boston, then on to Algeria. Wright is being held in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, pending extradition hearings. He has asked to be released while the extradition process goes forward, and the court handling the case is considering his request, according to U.S. officials. (AP Photo/Noticias de Colares)AP – A convicted American killer who disappeared after a 1972 hijacking lived openly in West Africa in the 1980s under his real name for years and even socialized with U.S. embassy officials there, a former U.S. ambassador said Thursday.

10 years after 9/11, a real home to honor victims (AP)

(AP Photo/Matt Rourke)AP – Oak trees and sparkling waterfalls have replaced the shards and smoke and bodies. Ten years after the attacks that changed American life, the World Trade Center site is a memorial, and the need to mourn is being eclipsed by the need to honor the memories of the nearly 3,000 people killed.
