The NCAA is giving college sports a whole new look. The Division I Board of Directors approved a package of sweeping reforms that gives conferences the option of adding more money to scholarship offers, schools the opportunity to award scholarships for multiple years, imposes tougher academic standards on recruits and changes the summer basketball recruiting model.

NCAA penalizes 12 ‘Canes over benefits

The NCAA punished 12 current Miami football players Tuesday, including suspending eight key ones and ordering the dozen Hurricanes to repay extra benefits they accepted from rogue booster and convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro. The decision, coming six days before the Hurricanes’ season opener, should be a big blow to Al Golden’s first season as coach.

UConn beats Butler, 53-41, to win NCAA men’s basketball national championship

Kemba Walker scored 16 points and Connecticut beat Butler 53-41 on Monday night to give Jim Calhoun his third national championship, something only four other coaches have done. Connecticut capped one of college basketball’s best postseason runs, winning six games in the NCAA tournament after winning five games in as many days to win the Big East title.

Butler forward Gordon Hayward’s halfcourt shot hit backboard, then rim, then barely careened out. Duke beat Butler 61-59 on Monday night. What a game! And what a way to end the season, even if America’s favorite underdog came up a little short.
