Harper: Heavy hitter could fit in city
Would a scenario where CC Sabathia leaves, the Yankees lose out on C.J. Wilson and trade Jesus Montero lead the Bombers to Prince Fielder? The potential of the lineup would be tantalizing and, who knows? Maybe Fielder would hit in October as well as his father Cecil did in the Bronx in 1996.

Harper: Yanks need clutch, not luck
In explaining the concept of postseason clutch hitting, Joe Girardi Tuesday repeatedly suggested the idea that luck plays a significant role, and any sabermetrician worth his empirical evidence surely would agree. OK, but as the concept applies to the Yankees this past postseason, here’s the question: When does luck give way to more damning analysis?

Harper: Yanks back to the blueprint
A second straight disappointing October might have fans screaming for changes, but all the Yankees really needed was a base hit by any one of a half-dozen players in Game 5 against the Tigers and they’d still be playing. Is there a sure fix for coming up small in the clutch? More to the point: is there a way to make major changes on a team of aging stars locked into largely untradeable contracts?

Harper: Time for Jorge to walk away
For so long this summer it seemed as if Jorge Posada’s proud career as a Yankee was going to end badly, perhaps even in embarrassing fashion if he was kicked to the curb for October. Harper: Alex looks like old A-Rod
The worst part of all for the Yankees, not just Thursday night but in looking to the future, was how overmatched Alex Rodriguez looked at the plate – or inside his own head the way he used to be every October. Or maybe both. Either way it is awfully ominous, considering that at 36, A-Rod has six years remaining on a contract that is looking more and more like the worst kind of albatross for the Yankees.

Harper: A.J. goes from zero to Grand hero
In the end, perhaps only Curtis Granderson’s retreating, stumbling catch of a scalded line drive with the bases loaded in the first inning saved A.J. Burnett from the worst baseball night of his life. But, hey, give the guy his due. Burnett grabbed on to that life preserver and, for the moment at least, used it to save the Yankees’ season and force Game 5 in the Bronx Thursday.

Harper: Valverde saves face on ALDS ‘over’ boast
Somehow you knew that on this night it would come down to Jose Valverde, on the mound trying to back up his declaration – perhaps meant lightheartedly, perhaps not – that the Tigers would finish off this series right here in Motown. It didn’t matter that he risked annoying the Yankees. All year he annoyed a lot of people with his celebration antics after a save, and yet nobody could keep him from prefection.
