Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks put a stunning end to their misery in Miami. Now they can win their first NBA title without ever coming back to South Florida. Nowitzki made the tie-breaking layup with 3.6 seconds left, and the Mavericks roared back from 15 points down with 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter to beat the Heat 95-93 on Thursday night and tie the NBA finals at one game apiece.

While Derek Jeter’s Sunday revival in Texas did not provide total euphoria for those with a financial interest in the Yankees, it had to at least produce some sighs of relief. The Jets all talked about a dismal first half costing them a shot at the Super Bowl, but really the game came down to a time-consuming drive spanning the third and fourth quarters that culminated in a baffling series near the goal line that virtually ended any real chance the Jets had of crawling out of an early 24-point hole. Brian Schottenheimer showed no sense of urgency in his play-calling.
